The purpose of this ecological unit map is to aid sampling for inventory and monitoring studies in Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve, Alaska. Ecological units were mapped in Dec 1998 on a 1:250,000 topographic map base, using as additional references 1:60,000 scale high altitude color-infrared aerial photographs (1979-1984) and the classified satellite image "Yukon-Charley/Black River/40 Mile Earth cover classification" by Ducks Unlimited (1998). Ecological units were mapped to the ecologic subsection level in the classification used by the US Forest Service [Cleland et al, 1998]. National hierarchical framework of ecological units. Maps were inked on mylar overlays, scanned, and digitized into a coverage using ARC/INFO 7.2. Digitizing was done in UTM projection and the resulting coverage was projected into Alaska Albers. The coverage contains 229 polygons, classified into 14 subsections and 29 detailed ecological units. There has been increasing interest in inventory and monitoring of natural resources in National Parks, Monuments, and Preserves in Alaska. Addition fields were added and populated as well. NPS uses PDS.AML to additem and calculate LENGTH_MILES for arcs and ACRES and PERIM_MILES for polygons. The coverage is then projected to Geographic decimal degree coordinates on the Clarke 1866 spheroid. NPS used MAKEREGION in ArcEDIT to combine the detailed ecological unit polygons into its own region and also to combine the subsection polygons into its own region. This was done to facilitate joining tables of species occurrence by unit. The regions produced are named DEU and SUBSECTION. DEU contains 29 regions and SUBSECTION contains 14 regions.
