We used variable circular plot point counts to describe avian presence and abundance at specific points in a parkwide grid pattern. We recorded all species detected and the linear distance to each bird when first seen, date, time, and level of ambient noise. A journal was keep for each field day describing location (UTM coordinates), habitat type (cover type), and elevation. At each point, vegetation was sampled to describe habitat structure and composition within a circular 50 m radius plot centered at the point count survey point. Data from this rapid characterization included aspect, slope, vegetation cover (herbaceous, shrub, and tree), and densiometer readings recorded along 20 m transects in the 4 cardinal directions.
			<purpose>NPS established the Natural Resource Inventory and Monitoring Program to help park units collect scientifically credible ecological resource information and to develop or improve field and analytical monitoring techniques. As a first step, a 5-year inventory was initiated to gather a core set of data describing park vascular plants and vertebrate resources. This landbird survey gathered data to describe avian abundance, distribution, and habitat use at 3 large parks (MORA, NOCA, and OLYM), and at 2 small parks (LEWI and SAJH) within the North Coast and Cascades Network (NCCN). Data was also collected to aid in the development of a network monitoring program for breeding songbirds (e.g. sample sizes needed). </purpose>
			<supplinf>The Access database contains all the data records and attribute information, and the associated ArcGIS shapefile contains the point count locations (see Cross Referenced SAJHBDa09a.shp), which can be linked to the database through the unique IDs (POINT). The database was last revised September 26, 2006.</supplinf>

				<methdesc>We used five-minute variable circular plot (VCP) point counts coupled with detailed habitat descriptions of each point count location as our primary means of surveying birds. VCP point counts entailed recording the horizontal distance, estimated to the nearest meter, to every bird seen or heard during the point count. Vegetation descriptions entailed collecting data on vegetation structure and composition within a 50 m radius circular plot centered on each survey point, and then assigning a primary habitat classification (of nine possible habitat types) to the plot. We also recorded cover, average height, and species composition of four vegetation layers (ground-cover, understory, sub-canopy, and canopy), conducted point-centered quarters 50 m in each cardinal direction from the plot center, measured the canopy cover using a spherical densiometer, and recorded summary plot characteristics such as aspect, slope, and the presence of running or standing water. We collected additional habitat information, including trunk density and species composition, in two 20 m x 40 m subplots within the larger 50 m radius plot. </methdesc>

			<attraccr>We tested field crews to insure they could identify by sight and sound all birds found in NCCN parks. Once data was entered into all databases, they were screened to insure all fields had identifiable codes. All database fields were cross-checked (on all forms) to insure they matched (e.g. date on point count form for point A matched date on vegetation form for point A). We plotted all coordinates and visually inspected them to insure coordinates were accurate.</attraccr>

		<overview>
			<eaover>The Access database contains the following four tables: DENSALL, PCT, VEGA, and VEGB. All tables can be linked via the POINT field. DENSALL contains the densiometer measurements of canopy cover. PCT contains the point-count data fields such as time, noise interference, bird species detected, and flyovers. VEGA contains all the general habitat data for the 50m radius point count circle, and detailed habitat data for the first of two 20m x 40m subplots (subplot A) adjacent to the point count station. Fields include point count location coordinates, slope, aspect, surface water presence, canopy cover, tree species stem counts, snags, and percent cover of tree species, understory species and ground cover classes. VEGB contains the detailed habitat data for the second of the two 20m x 40m vegetation subplots (subplot B) at each point count station.</eaover>
