These data represent results from the use of remotely triggered camera traps to inventory forest carnivores throughout forested habitat in Olympic National Park during the winters of 2001-2002 and 2002-2003. We sampled in 13 four square mile blocks each year, for a total of 26 bocks sampled over the 2 winters of the study. We obtained over 1270 animal pictures, and detected 21 different species, 7 of which were forest carnivores (ermine, long-tailed weasel, spotted skunk, bobcat, mountain lion, coyote, and black bear).
<purpose>The NPS established the Natural Resource Inventory and Monitoring Program (I&M) to help park units collect scientifically credible ecological resource information and to develop or improve field and analytical monitoring techniques. As a first step, 5-year inventories were initiated in the North Coast and Cascades Network (NCCN) to gather core sets of data describing park vascular plants and vertebrate resources. The primary objective of the forest carnivore camera survey was to gain information on species presence (i.e. complete the 90 percent documented species list with current data) in the NCCN. For most of the larger parks, some forest carnivore species have not been documented for over 40 years, and several are suspected to be extirpated. These include fisher in Mount Rainier (MORA), North Cascades (NOCA), and Olympic (OLYM) National Parks, wolverine in NOCA and MORA, wolf in OLYM and MORA and Canada lynx in MORA. The secondary objective was to gain insight on species distribution patterns across broad geographic, elevation and precipitation gradients. The inventory at OLYM is one of three forest carnivore inventories conducted in the three large parks (MORA, NOCA and OLYM) of the NCCN.</purpose>
<supplinf>This Access database contains all the sampling site habitat information and remote camera records of forest carnivore observations. The associated GIS shapefile (see Cross Referenced forcarnsta_point.shp) can be linked from its field 'StationNam' to the Access database field 'SubBlockName' in the table 'tblStationData'</supplinf>

<taxonpro>All questionable slides were reviewed by more than one member of the field crew and the supervisor. Slides with no animals detected were reviewed twice, and later discarded. For the majority of the data entry, data was entered by one technician. At the end of data entry, a subset of the slides were reviewed by the supervisor, and the database was reviewed for consistency with the number of slides, field forms, and species detected in the slide notebooks. Scientific plant and animal names from the database were searched in ITIS and the ITIS-accepted scientific names were entered into the BioProfile of this metadata file.</taxonpro>

<logic>All field crew were trained in all data recording procedures. Two field biologists worked together to verify each other's work. The data were reviewed once more at time of data entry into computer. The computer data files were verified against the original field forms by two observers after data entry. All locational data acquired using a Geographic Positioning System were compared to a gridded USGS 1:24,000-scale topographic map. Upon finding any error in the GPS unit it was re-calibrated. When recording elevation, the crew utilized an altimeter that had been calibrated at a known elevation. All questionable slides were reviewed by more than one member of the field crew and the supervisor. Slides with no animals detected were reviewed twice, and later discarded. For the majority of the data entry, data was entered by one technician. At the end of data entry, a subset of the slides were reviewed by the supervisor, and the database was reviewed for consistency with the number of slides, field forms, and species detected in the slide notebooks.</logic>

<methdesc>Methods generally followed Zielinski and Kucera (1995), with field implementation following recommendations from Keith Aubrey (1997, pers. comm. 2000), and modifications made by Jim Petterson after his first years efforts in MORA (Petterson 2001). Surveys were conducted in late winter and early spring. Sampling Scheme: Our area of inference was suitable habitats for forest carnivores within OLYM, constrained by accessibility (within 1.5 km of roads and trails and excluding areas with slope greater than 35 percent). Using GIS, a 4-square mile grid was created for the extent of the Park and from which possible sampling blocks were selected that were 1) greater than 50 percent inside the park, 2) greater than 50 percent within 1.5 km of a road or trail, and 3) within 3 miles of a trailhead. We estimated we could sample approximately 25 blocks per winter, so we systematically chose every 2.5 blocks, going from East to West and North to South across the grid, eliminated those with difficult access, resulting in a sample of 45 blocks. Following Zielinski and Kucera (1995), we divided the 4-square mile blocks into four 1-square mile sub-blocks, and then randomly selected 2 sub-blocks within each 4-mile block for sampling. Sub-blocks had to contain habitat within 1.5 km from the trail and permit safe access to be selected. We then randomly located a sample point within the first sub-block for possible sample site location. If a point was deemed inaccessible, a new point was randomly selected. We used the same procedure to locate a sample site in the second sub-block, with the additional criteria that this site had to be at least one mile away from the first site. Where it appeared questionable whether the crews could safely access one of the 2 selected sub-blocks, we also selected a point in a third, alternative, sub-block. Field Procedures: At each site, field crew navigated to the selected point using maps, compass, altimeter, and where available, a GPS. At each site, a bait station consisting of a whole feathered chicken (wrapped in chicken wire) and a puntured can of tuna was attached to a large tree, approximately 1 m up from the ground. A Trailmaster T 550 dual sensor attached to a 35mm camera was placed on a tree approximately 5m away from the bait. When an animal came to investigate the bait, it was recorded as an event on the Trailmaster sensor, and the sensor triggered the camera to take a picture. Skunk scent and a marten lure (scent) were also spread around the site as an attractant. At some back-country sites, we deployed additional, incidental, set-ups. Although not part of the official sampling array, we felt this increased probability of detecting rare or uncommon species such as fisher and marten, that may be more prevalent in the more remote areas of the park. At each site we recorded information on set-up times and conditions, camera and sensor status, and habitat variables. We attempted to have have the camera set up in each station for the protocol of 28 nights. We checked cameras every 2-3 weeks, and during these checks, we replaced film, batteries, bait, or scent if necessary.</methdesc>
