<descript>
We investigated the potential occurrence of forest carnivores in North Cascades National Park Service Complex from late January to mid-May in 2003 and 2004. We sampled 39 blocks that were each 4mi2 with 2 camera stations in each block (78 individual cameras). From 2,184 operable camera/nights we recorded 1,734 identifiable photos of 13 mammal and 5 bird species. American marten (Martes americana) and spotted skunk (Spilogale gracilis) were the most frequently recorded carnivore species, found in 64% (1,125 photos) and 23% (313 photos) of the sampling blocks, respectively. No detections were made of fisher, wolverine or lynx. Sample size and safety constraints may have limited our ability to detect these more elusive and rare carnivore species.
<purpose>The NPS established the Natural Resource Inventory and Monitoring Program (I&M) to help park units collect scientifically credible ecological resource information and to develop or improve field and analytical monitoring techniques. As a first step, 5-year inventories were initiated in the North Coast and Cascades Network (NCCN) to gather core sets of data describing park vascular plants and vertebrate resources. This forest carnivore survey gathered data to document forest carnivore presence and distribution and was one of three such inventories conducted at the three large parks (Mount Rainier, North Cascades, and Olympic National Parks) in the NCCN.</purpose>
<supplinf>This Access database contains all the sampling site habitat information and remote camera records of forest carnivore observations. The associated GIS shapefiles (see Cross Referenced Carn03_04blk.shp and Carn03_04pnt.shp) can be linked from the field SampleUnitNum in tblSampleUnitData in the Access database to the field 'BLCK_NUM' in the shapefiles.</supplinf>

<methdesc>We narrowed our coverage to accessible areas based on the following criteria: slopes less than 25 degrees, along trails within 7 km of trailheads, and off-trail areas within 100-1500 m of a road, trail, or reservoir. Anything outside of these parameters was not surveyed. These criteria were selected to represent what we thought field crews could accomplish safely as a day trip. We used Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to develop a parkwide grid of 4 mi2 sampling blocks. Two quadrants from each block were randomly selected for placement of a remotely triggered camera station. GIS applications were used to randomly select Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates, one in each of the two selected quadrants to define approximate locations of the camera setup points. A minimum distance of one mile separated each camera station. Camera stations consisted of a dual-sensor remote camera system, which includes an automatic 35-mm camera connected to a Trailmaster 550 infrared trail monitor. Each station was consistently baited with a whole feathered chicken and a can of tuna placed above it on the bait tree. Above the tuna can we placed a masonite placard (approximately 4in x 8in) with the appropriate 5-letter acronym used to identify the site. The area was then scented with three commercial trapping lures including skunk essence, which we mixed with lanolin to form a gelled paste, a commercial marten lure and anise oil. Camera stations were left installed for a minimum 28-night sampling period per protocol procedures. </methdesc>
