We sampled 168 stream segments from nine watersheds in North Cascades National Park Service Complex during two inventory efforts conducted from 1996-1998 and 2003-2004. Surveys entailed stream habitat characterizations such as stream channel and flow measurements, vegetation and canopy cover measurements, and stream substrate classification. as well as sampling for stream amphibians. When found, amphibians were photographed, classed into age/lifestage categories and a variety of body size measurements were taken. No voucher specimens were collected.
<purpose>The NPS established the Natural Resource Inventory and Monitoring Program (I&M) to help park units collect scientifically credible ecological resource information and to develop or improve field and analytical monitoring techniques. As a first step, 5-year inventories were initiated in the North Coast and Cascades Network (NCCN) to gather core sets of data describing park vascular plants and vertebrate resources. The goal of this particular Inventory was to obtain baseline data on the abundance and distribution of stream obligate amphibian species in the North Cascades National Park Service Complex, particularly Ascaphus truei and Dicamptodon tenebrosus, and to evaluate the environmental factors affecting the distribution of stream amphibians. These objectives will assist in the development of long-term monitoring protocols for stream amphibians.</purpose>
<supplinf>The Access database contains all the data records and attribute information, and the associated ArcGIS shapefiles contain the sampling locations (see Cross Referenced Amph_96_98.shp for 1996-1998 surveys and Amph_03_04.shp for 2003-2004 surveys). These shapefiles can be linked to the database through the unique IDs: the linking field in the database tables is Survey_ID, and the fields in the shapefiles are Survey_ID (for Amph_03_04.shp) and DB_ID (for Amph_96_98.shp).</supplinf>

<complete>1. In the database table tbl_Search_Effort, records with no data resulted from streams that were dry and thus not surveyed. 2. In the tables tbl_Reach_Data and tbl_Transect_Data, missing water chemistry or physical/habitat data were generally a result of equipment malfunction, or for some parameters in the 1996-1998 survey effort, not measured in the field. 3. In the table tbl_Specimen_Data, missing data are primarily due to escape of specimens or are lifestage-specific, i.e. only pertain to certain lifestages (age). Several records with no Transect_ID or Transect# document incidental observations of amphibians, i.e. not observed during a transect survey.</complete>

<methdesc>The surveys focused on wadeable 1st- 2nd- and 3rd-order streams that were accessible within one day's travel from trails or roads. Slight differences in protocol between the 1996-1998 and 2003-2004 survey efforts are documented in the Inventory Final Report (cited above) and the progress reports for 1996-1998 (cited below). Stream segments sampled ranged from 50 meters to up to 40 times the bankfull width. Ten sample stations were marked within each segment at which transects were established to measure stream channel and habitat characterstics. Physical charactersitics measured included stream temperature, conductivity, gradient, water depth and velocity. Habitat characterization included classifying substrate, quantifying woody debris, and canopy cover. Any obligate stream amphibians captured by systematic searches at each transect were identified to species, life stage, and sex, when possible, photographed, and then released after a series of body size measurements were made.</methdesc>
