In 2001, a small mammal and bat survey was conducted at Fort Clatsop National Memorial (FOCL, now known as Lewis and Clark National Historical Park). Sherman live traps were used to sample in 5 areas of the park, and mist nets were used to sample volant mammals in one additional area of the park. A total of 418 captures representing 242 individual animals of 9 small mammal species were documented as a result of the study. In addition, one bat was captured (long-eared bat - Myotis evotis).
<purpose>The National Park Service (NPS) established the Natural Resource Inventory and Monitoring Program (I&M) to help park units collect scientifically credible ecological resource information and to develop or improve field and analytical monitoring techniques. As a first step, 5-year inventories were initiated in the North Coast and Cascades Network (NCCN) to gather core sets of data describing park vascular plants and vertebrate resources. The small mammal inventory completed at FOCL was one of several vertebrate inventories completed in NPS units by the NCCN which included amphibian, fish, bat, and forest carnivore studies.</purpose>
