This fish inventory targeted streams of the lands newly acquired for Lewis and Clark National Historical Park (LEWI) and builds from previous surveys that were summarized in the "Inventory of Fish Species in Fort Clatsop National Memorial, Astoria, Oregon" (Brenkman, 2002 - see Cross References). A total of 10 fish species from four families were observed during surveys in Ness, West Fork Ness, and Trail Creeks and the Skipanon River. It is likely that this inventory did not capture the entire fish species assemblage in these systems due to limited sampling effort (spatially and temporally), the extent of seasonal movements of fish, and the presumed high occurrence of non-native fish species in the lower Columbia Basin. This inventory, however, does establish a baseline for LEWI stream systems that previously were unsurveyed. The following fish species were observed in 2005 that were not observed in 2002 surveys: riffle sculpin (Cottus gulosus), western brook lamprey (Lampetra richardsoni) and federally threatened Lower Columbia River Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytcha).
<purpose>The NPS established the Natural Resource Inventory and Monitoring Program (I&M) to help park units collect scientifically credible ecological resource information and to develop or improve field and analytical monitoring techniques. As a first step, 5-year inventories were initiated in the North Coast and Cascades Network (NCCN) to gather core sets of data describing park vascular plants and vertebrate resources. The goal of this particular Inventory project was to establish a baseline inventory of fish species that inhabit sampled portions of each creek and the Skipanon River in LEWI, which includes the lands of the former Fort Clatsop National Memorial (FOCL). Specifically, the objectives were to: 1) determine the presence of fish species in each creek and river; and 2) establish a small collection of voucher specimens as a reference for LEWI. Information derived from fish inventories on newly acquired lands may provide a better understanding of the existing conditions of resources in the park and will permit park managers to make more informed resource management decisions.</purpose>
<supplinf>There are no formal datasets associated with this Inventory project. All findings are summarized in the Final Report. </supplinf>

<logic>All field crew were trained in all data recording procedures. Two field biologists worked together to verify each other's work. All locational data acquired using a Geographic Positioning System were compared to a gridded USGS 1:24,000-scale topographic map. Upon finding any error in the GPS unit it was re-calibrated. When recording elevation, the crew utilized an altimeter that had been calibrated at a known elevation. The elevations were always double-checked by referencing the USGS topography maps. </logic>

<methdesc>To determine presence or non-detection of fish species in Ness, West Fork Ness and Trail Creeks, single-pass electrofishing without block-nets was employed from April 26 to 28, 2005. A two-person crew, equipped with a Smith-Root Model 12A backpack electrofisher and dip-nets proceeded upstream capturing and identifying fish. In the Skipanon River, only the margin of the west bank was sampled to a point where water depth reduced the effectiveness of backpack electrofishing. We also deployed a baited minnow trap for 36 hours in portions of Ness Creek from April 26 to 28, 2005. Captured fish were enumerated by species and lengths measured to the nearest mm. Fish were released near their point of capture unless vouchers were collected.</methdesc>
