<descript>
The Digital Geologic Map of the Craters of the Moon, Kings Bowl, and Wapi lava fields, and the Great Rift Volcanic rift zone, south-central Idaho is composed of GIS data layers, two ancillary GIS tables, a Windows Help File with ancillary map text, figures and tables, GIS data layer and table FGDC metadata and ArcView 3.X legend (.AVL) files. The data were completed as a component of the Geologic Resource Evaluation (GRE) program, a National Park Service (NPS) Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) funded program that is administered by the NPS Geologic Resources Division (GRD). All GIS and ancillary tables were produced as per the NPS GIS-Geology Coverage/Shapefile Data Model (available at: http://science.nature.nps.gov/im/inventory/geology/GeologyGISDataModel.cfm). The GIS data is available as coverage and table export (.E00) files, and as a shapefile (.SHP) and DBASEIV (.DBF) table files. The GIS data projection is NAD83, UTM Zone 12N. That data is within the area of interest of Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve. *** The source map's mapped geology doesn't align with the map's base as it should. This is a problem with the USGS published source map (I-1632). The USGS (Denver) has been contacted concerning this major problem. Thus, the spatial accuracy of all geologic features, although true to the USGS published source map is at best inaccurate. In comparing the source map base to the mapped geology, typically using caldera boundaries and the topographic representation of these features where this comparison could be made, features were observed to be positionally "off" a distance greater than National Map Accuracy Standards (NMAS). At 1:100,000 (source map) scale, greater than 166.7’ or 50.8m. Comparing the mapped geology to aerial photos were the extent of lava flows could easily be discerned in the aerial photo, these contacts displayed the same or similar positional inaccuracy. Please use this data with the understanding that geologic features are significantly “off” from their actual physical location. This problem is present only with digital data derived from USGS I-1632, and is not present in other GRE digital geologic-GIS data (maps) for CRMO that were produced from different USGS source maps. ***
<purpose>The data are intended to assist NPS personnel in the protection and management of Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve.</purpose>
<supplinf>The data layers (feature classes) that comprise the Digital Geologic Map of the Craters of the Moon, Kings Bowl, and Wapi lava fields, and the Great Rift Volcanic rift zone, south-central Idaho include: crmoGLG (geologic units and contacts), CRMOFLT (geologic faults), CRMOATD (attitude observation points), CRMODAT (age-date localities), CRMOVNT (volcanic point features), CRMOVLN (linear volcanic features) and CRMOMIN (mine and mine related point features). There are three additional ancillary map components, the Geologic Unit Information (CRMOGLG1) Table, the Source Map Information (CRMOMAP) Table and the Map Help File (CRMOGLG.HLP). Refer to the NPS GIS-Geology Coverage/Shapefile Data (available at: http://science.nature.nps.gov/im/inventory/geology/GeologyGISDataModel.cfm) for detailed data layer and table specifications including attribute field parameters, definitions and domains.</supplinf>
