        Craig Allen interpreted two sets of aerial photos with a mirror
        stereoscope, 1935 black and white and 1981 color. All roads
        visible were mapped across 187,858 hectare of the Jemez Mountains.
        Roads were classified into five categories: railroads (not
        significant and so not offered as a coverage); paved roads;
        improved roads, which typically displayed gravel surface; dirt
        roads, exhibiting a dirt surface where a road bed had clearly
        been cut into the terrain; and primitive roads, a catch-all
        category of logging skid trails, four-wheel drive roads and
        various informal road traces. Most road types mapped easily and
        directly onto the orthophoto overlays, but interpretation of
        primitive roads involved some subjectivity as they were often at
        the limits of aerial photo resolution and difficult to see where
        present beneath forest overstories. Primitive road densities
        were likely underestimated for portions of the 1935 landscape due
        to limited resolution of the available photographs. John Selkirk
        mapped most of the 1981 roads, while Craig Allen mapped the 1935
        landscape and edited revised portions of the 1981 road map. The
        information was mapped onto mylar overlays of 7.5 minute, quad-
        sized orthophotos (1975 photography).
This was digitized through SWRO under contract with TGS Technology
        Inc. of Fort Collins, Colorado. Once digitized each layer was
        loaded into MOSS, 16-bit at the NPS Regional Office in Santa Fe
        and later brought into 32-bit MOSS at Los Alamos National Lab.
        In 1989, Lee Graham (under contract with SWRO) converted these to
        GRASS 3.0. In May, 1996, this coverage was exported from GRASS
        using v.out.dlg into ARC/INFO</procdesc><srcused Sync="TRUE">H:\arcdata-new\Metadata\Sam's work\in progress\Submitted Files\band_bnd2000.txt.xml</srcused><date Sync="TRUE">20040419</date><time Sync="TRUE">14151300</time><proccont><cntinfo><cntperp><cntper>Kay Beeley</cntper><cntorg>Bandelier National Monument</cntorg></cntperp><cntpos>Cartographic Technician</cntpos><cntvoice>505-672-3861 ext. 542</cntvoice><cntfax>505-672-9607</cntfax><cntemail>kay_beeley@nps.gov</cntemail><hours>0800-1630, M-F, MST</hours><cntaddr><addrtype>mailing and physical address</addrtype><address>HCR 1 Box 1 Suite 15</address><city>Los Alamos</city><state>New Mexico</state><postal>87544</postal><country>USA</country></cntaddr></cntinfo></proccont><procdate>1988</procdate></procstep><srcinfo><srccite><citeinfo><title>Changes in the landscape of the Jemez Mountains, New Mexico,</title><origin>Craig D.
